Brian graduated from Humboldt High School in 1965. His preparatory education was at Iowa State University, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from Iowa State University in 1969. He received his Law Degree, With Distinction, from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1972.

He joined the Iowa National Guard in 1969 and attended Officer's Training School at Camp Dodge, Iowa. He remained a member of the Iowa National Guard for seven years, resigning his position as an officer of the JAG Corp. in 1976.

He joined the firm of Baker, Miller and Baker in Humboldt in the summer of 1972. He served as the first Judicial Magistrate for Humboldt County for six years.

Brian is an active member in the Faith United Methodist Church of Humboldt. He has served on the Board of Trustees and several other committees, as well as being a member of the chancel choir for over thirty years. He is married and has three children. Other interests include traveling, sports and volunteer work.
